The Innovative Team for Intelligent Offshore Aquacultural Facilities Design and Engineer Equipment

Team introduction

Intelligent Offshore Aquacultural Facilities Design and Engineer Equipment Innovative Team, which is a multidisciplinary team that comprehensively uses technical means such as marine engineering, fluid dynamics, bioengineering and information science. Aiming at the technical problems of “bottleneck problem” in the equipment of the Offshore Aquaculture Project, innovative research has been carried out, and research results have been widely applied to nearly 50 enterprises and scientific research institutes. Therefore, it brings significant economic and social benefits. The team has been supported by more than 20 major projects, including the national key R&D plan and the key programs of the National Natural Science Foundation of China. The team presided and compiled over 5 national and industrial technical standards and won 5 awards for scientific and technological achievements including the first prize of the Ministry of Education for scientific and technological progress. The members have published more than 300 SCI papers, which have been cited more than 5000 times. More than 50 national invention patents and 1 US patent were authorized.

Team leader

YunPeng Zhao, professor, doctoral supervisor, Winner of National Excellent Youth Fund, Highly Cited Chinese Researchers. Focused on the equipment development of offshore aquaculture engineering. Presided over 4 National Natural Science Foundation projects, 1 national key research and development project and more than 20 government sponsored research projects, including the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Department of Science and Technology of Liaoning Province. Published more than 120 papers, and in which more than 90 papers have been included in SCI. Granted 11 national invention patents and presided over the preparation of one national technical standard. Achievements won the first prize of Ministry of Education-Level Science and Technology Awards in 2015 (as the second completer), the second prize of Liaoning Province-Level Science and Technology Progress Award in 2016 (as the first completer), the second prize of Marine Engineering Science and Technology Award in 2013 (as the first completer), the second prize of Ministry of Education-Level Natural Science Award in 2010 (as the fourth completer), the second prize of Marine Engineering Science and Technology Award in 2012, and the second prize of Ministry of Education-Level Science and Technology Progress Award in 2006.

Team research achievements and application fields

    The team carried out innovative research on several “bottleneck” technical problems in the offshore aquaculture engineering equipment. The research results are widely used in nearly 50 enterprises and research institutes.  Remarkable economic and social benefits have been achieved.  The main research results are as follows:


1 Engineering design theory of offshore aquaculture facilities


    The theoretical system of hydrodynamic analysis of the large wind-wave resistant aquaculture facilities in the offshore sea is constructed, and the theoretical method of wind-wave resistant design with tow is solved. A new similarity theory for physical model test of flexible mesh structure is proposed. The problem of hydrodynamic physical model test method of cage is solved. The hydrodynamic numerical simulation method of "flexible + large displacement + large deformation" structure is established, and the accurate calculation of hydrodynamic numerical simulation of cage structure is realized. Developed the first domestic cage hydrodynamic analysis software, the calculation accuracy is 20% higher than the world's most famous Aqua-Fe software.
This achievement won the first prize of Science and Technology Progress of the Ministry of Education in 2015: Research and application of key technologies of new structures in offshore aquaculture.

2 Design of land-sea relay aquaculture facilities and habitat construction technology


    The key technologies for structure design, product development and safety evaluation of land-sea relay facilities were broken through, and the autonomous research and development of land-sea relay facilities suitable for the complex sea situation in our country was realized. The design method of cage frame, net coat and mooring system is put forward. It provides core technical support for the design of offshore aquaculture equipment in our country the first set of HDPE gravity cage, the first 10,000-ton class floating fishing platform, the pile-type deep-sea aquaculture platform of the world's largest water body, etc. The key technology of land-sea relay breeding facility design and habitat construction suitable for the north was broken through. It ensures the efficient and safe operation of aquaculture production throughout the year.
This achievement won the first prize of Liaoning Provincial Science and Technology Progress in 2020: Research and development and application of key technologies for Land-sea relay breeding facility design and habitat construction.


3 Safety assessment and disaster mitigation of offshore aquaculture facilities


    It breaks through the technical problem of safety risk assessment and prevention of aquaculture facilities under extreme sea conditions and constructs a standardized system to promote large-scale industrial applications. An optimization analysis method for scale layout of facility aquaculture area was proposed. Developed China’s first safety assessment and early warning system for large offshore cages to provide real-time warning for the whole country. China’s first marine aquaculture facilities design national standard “Technical specification for design of ocean gravitate cage” prepared by the team presided over. Four series of standards for aquaculture facilities and equipment suitable for the characteristics of China’s sea areas were compiled, which significantly reduced the disaster risk of ocean aquaculture facilities. And the technical achievements have been widely applied in East China Sea, South China Sea, Yellow Sea and Bohai Sea.
The achievement was awarded the Second Prize of Science and Technology Progress in Liaoning Province in 2017, which was as followed: Research and Application of Key Technologies for Hydrodynamic and Safety Assessment of Offshore Anti-Wave Cage.


The research results are widely used in the east and south of the Yellow Sea and Bohai Sea in China, realizing the safe operation of the new offshore culture facilities in the open ocean with a water depth of 20-40 m. The device has resisted the climate of Grade 12 typhoon and storm surge for many times, and have successfully guaranteed the maritime safety of 2.083 billion yuan commercial fish since 2012. In addition,the water quality of aquaculture waters has been significantly improved (the nutrition index and pollution index have decreased by 97% and 87% respectively), the unit water quality has increased by 136%, and the social benefits are significant. According to the statistics of 9 representative mariculture engineering application units, the total newly increased profits in recent three years are 279.71 billion yuan, and the new increased value of output is 1.8395 billion yuan. The Ministry of Education believes that “This research results have promoted the industrialization process of marine aquaculture facilities and equipment in China, which has generally reached the international leading level”.
